Transition to TORQUE
Batch queuing software on the Beowulf compute cluster was recently upgraded. Learn how to use the new scheduler and take advantage of the transition period to convert your batch scripts.
The new batch job scheduler is TORQUE, a widely-used package based on OpenPBS. Many things about TORQUE will seem familiar to you, but there are differences. You will almost certainly need to modify existing batch scripts, but in many cases the changes will be almost trivial.The new job scheduler is available on Beowulf now, ready for use. To allow time for transition, the old scheduler is still running.
Jobs submitted under the old scheduler will run to completion, but after March 22 2008 it will be closed to new jobs.
With this change, all clusters in the RCC (with exception of the oldest) will have the same job scheduler software. We expect this will make things easier for you, the researcher. It should also position us to develop a grid, if that becomes desirable.
What You Need to Know
We've prepared three short articles that briefly explain how to get running under the new job scheduler. The first two describe the essential commands and how to access them in your shell environment. The third article describes the queue configuration on Beowulf.
